PINEVILLE, N.C. — The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Pineville Thursday afternoon and traveled into Union County.
Weather officials say the tornado touched down around 12:18 p.m. along Nations Ford Road at the North Carolina, South Carolina line. The tornado then traveled more than 17 miles and came to an end near Hawthorne Drive in Indian Trail.
According to a report from the NWS, the tornado reached a maximum wind speed of 95 mph and lasted about 16 minutes.
The system snapped and uprooted trees, damaged roofs, collapsed a wall at a building under construction, and brought down at least one tree on a house as it moved through mostly residential areas throughout southern Mecklenburg County and into Union County.
According to the Fujita Scale, an EF-1 tornado is described as being a weaker system with winds ranging from 86 to 110 mph.
