NORTH CAROLINA — EF-2 tornados with winds up to 130 mph caused damage in four Charlotte area counties Thursday, the National Weather Service has confirmed.

One of those tornados touched down just before 11 a.m. near the intersection of Battleground Road and I-85 in Cleveland County and moved east. After traveling a little more than eight miles over the course of 10 minutes, officials say the tornado came to an end near Freedom Mill Road in Gaston County.

A second EF-2 tornado was confirmed in the Kannapolis area. Officials say it touched down in Cabarrus County, just west of I-85, around 11:45 a.m. and made its way into a small portion of Rowan County. The tornado reached wind speeds up to 125 mph and traveled roughly 75 before coming to an end near Sisk-Carter Road.

Officials say the storm brought down two high tension electrical transmission towers in the Cleveland County area. Snapped and uprooted trees and damage to homes were also reported across each of the systems' paths.
