WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Wilmington Fire Department Recruit Academy will begin training 13 new recruits on Monday, January 6.

- First time in department history to have four female recruits in the same academy
- Recruits will complete 847 hours of training and 121 hours of pysical training over the next six months
The 2020 class is the first in department history to have four female recruits in the same academy, according to Wilmington Fire Department.
Officials say each member will complete roughly 847 hours of training, along with 121 hours of physical training over the next six months.
The recruits will also earn certifications for Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighter, Shipboard Firefighting, and Hazardous Materials Operations as well as Child Passenger Safety Seat Technician. The class will also receive training in Firefighter Rescue, Safety and Survival.
“As with each of our previous recruit classes we are excited to welcome this new group to our family. Each of these new recruits should be very proud to be selected for this position as over 300 people applied for the opportunity to work for the Wilmington Fire Department," Fire Chief C.V. “Buddy” Martinette said in a statement. “Now the real work begins. Over the next six months these young men and women will be rigorously tested and evaluated in their pursuit of becoming a professional fire and EMS provider.”
