CHARLOTTE, N.C. - One of the big questions is how popular the MLS games will be when they start in Charlotte in 2021.

  • MLS average attendance is 21,000
  • The Atlanta United averages 52,000 fans per game
  • Charlotte has drawn more than 60,000 fans at soccer events at Bank of America Stadium

Atlanta United started its franchise just a few years ago. According to the Sports Business Daily, it now averages the most of any team for MLS crowd size.

Doug Roberson covers the team for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He says part of that is because of the area's large size, the average attendance at MLS games in Atlanta is a little more than 52,000. The average MLS game attendance is a little more than 21,000.

Roberson says the key for Charlotte will be configuring Bank of America Stadium for a smaller crowd, investing money in a solid marketing plan and having a team that wins.

"If Charlotte can establish that plan going forward, hire the right technical director, hire the right coach, hire the right scouting department, find the right players...then it will get the people excited,” Roberson says.

Tepper Sports and Entertainment points out that Charlotte has drawn more than 60,000 fans at previous soccer events at Bank of America Stadium.
