HATTERAS, N.C. – A man was medevaced by the Coast Guard from a cruise ship about 40 miles southeast of Hatteras on Monday, according to a U.S. Coast Guard news release.

The release said the man was experiencing appendicitis symptoms, and watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s Fifth District received the medevac request from the cruise ship’s captain. The duty flight surgeon recommended a medevac.

The man was medevaced via an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, according to the Coast Guard.

“The Coast Guard trains for events like this on a daily basis,” said Lt. Daniel Dunn, command duty officer at the Coast Guard’s Fifth District command center. “This ensures that when we respond, we are able to do so efficiently and to the best of our abilities.”
