NORTH CAROLINA -- State Senator Dan Bishop has won the GOP primary for North Carolina's District 9 congressional election.

Bishop was a sponsor of the state's bathroom bill. He started in Mecklenburg County as a commissioner, serving from 2005 to 2009. He then followed that up with a stint in the State House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017, before becoming the senator from the state's 39th district.

Ten Republicans were vying for the nomination. They ranged from first-time candidates to elected officials.

Also running for the Republican party were Stevie Rivenbark Hull, Matthew Ridenhour, Stony Rushing, Fern Shubert, Albert Lee Wiley, Jr., Chris Anglin, Leigh Thomas Brown, Kathie C. Day, and Gary Dunn.

This was a high-profile special election for a congressional seat vacant since last year’s election was tainted by fraud.

Republican and unaffiliated voters in the 9th congressional district casted ballots in person after two weeks of early voting to decide which GOP candidate will face Democrat Dan McCready in the fall.

District 9 residents went more than four months without representation in the U.S. House after the State Board of Elections declined to certify Republican Mark Harris as the winner due to allegations of election fraud.

Five people have been charged in the fraud scheme. To view results, click here.

NCGOP Releases Statement:

"Senator Bishop is a quality candidate to represent the 9th Congressional district. He is an experienced legislator with the knowledge to make the best decisions for the people he represents. The person who represents the 9th should not be afraid to take a stand when it comes to their beliefs. Make no mistake, the 9th Congressional District deserves a candidate of conviction and the voters will only get that with one candidate: Senator Dan Bishop. The North Carolina Republican Party stands ready to help Sen. Bishop keep this seat in Republican hands."

NCDP Releases Statement:

“From authoring HB2 to investing in a hate-speech fueled social media platform to attacking the free press, Dan Bishop is defined by his attempts to legislate and disseminate discrimination. Republicans’ top choice for a seat they attempted to steal is a second-rate candidate who has repeatedly embarrassed our state and who will be dogged not only by his efforts to legislate hate but his party’s rampant corruption.”

Democratic District 9 opponent Dan McCready Releases Statement:

"As you may recall, he’s best known for sponsoring HB2, North Carolina’s notorious “bathroom bill.” That bill discriminated against our state’s LGBTQ community, hurt our national reputation and cost us billions in economic activity. But he fought for it all the way to the end.

Now he wants to take his extreme far-right agenda to Washington. Special interests and Republican DC insiders are already lining up to help him because they know he’ll likely be a rubber stamp for their partisan agenda.

Now we’re in a four-month sprint to Election Day. It’s our grassroots team versus his special interest backers. And if this team steps up right now and puts in the work, we will win."
