MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — A judge Wednesday ordered the parents of 11-year-old Madalina Cojocari to surrender their passports if they post bail.

The parents were supposed to appear in court for a bond hearing Wednesday, more than a month after the girl’s disappearance. But a judge said the hearing was canceled.

Both Madalina’s mother, Diana Cojocari, 37, and stepfather, Christopher Palmiter, 60, remain in the Mecklenburg County jail. Diana Cojocari is being held on a $250,000 bond. Palmiter has a $200,000 bond.

“Over the past 12 days, the Cornelius Police Department has led a massive investigation to find Madalina Cojocari. One of the challenges in this case is, simply put, we were not notified she was gone,” Cornelius Police Capt. Jennifer Thompson said.

Madalina’s mother reported the girl missing Dec. 15 but said she had not been seen since Nov. 23, according to investigators. Police said Madalina's parents were arrested Dec. 17. Both have been charged with failure to report the disappearance of a child, a felony in North Carolina.

Police in Cornelius, North Carolina, say they have been working with state and federal investigators, going door to door, scouring surveillance video and searching in and around a nearby lake.

“School officials had repeatedly tried to contact Madalina’s parents. Finally, on Dec. 15, Madalina’s mother walked into school and said her daughter was missing,” Thompson said. “This is a serious case of a child whose parents clearly are not telling us everything they know.”

Thompson said investigators with the police department, the FBI and the State Bureau of Investigation have followed almost 250 leads locally, across state lines and internationally. She said they went door to door to 245 homes talking to the family’s neighbors in the Victoria Bay community.

Police have also used multiple search warrants to search the family’s home, Thompson said.

Madalina was last seen at school on Nov. 21, according to investigators. Police released a 19-second video of Madalina getting off the bus that day just before 5 p.m.

The school system said they tried to contact the family multiple times about the girl’s absences. On Dec. 15, police said, Madalina’s mother reported the disappearance to a school resource officer.
