Police shut down roads and evacuated homes in Durham after someone shot a K9 officer Tuesday afternoon, a spokesman said. There was a heavy police presence in the area with officers searching on the ground and by air.
Officers arrested the man shortly after 5 p.m., Durham police said.
The incident started when officers were searching a man suspected in "multiple larcenies" in the city, Durham police Capt. Brian Reitz said. The officers found a gun and the man ran, Reitz said.
As officers searched for the man in and around Maplewood Cemetery, near Duke University, Reitz said the man shot a police dog.
"We are trying to resolve this in a peaceful way," Reitz said. As of 4 p.m. the search was ongoing and Reitz called the area "an active scene."
The dog was in emergency surgery for its wounds, Reitz said at about 3:30 p.m. He did not give the name of the dog or its condition.
