RAEFORD, N.C. — Two Raeford police officers shot and killed a suspect Monday evening. The city's police chief said the suspect, 34-year-old Tavares Harrington, pointed a gun at two officers in uniform.

The shooting happened at about 7:30 p.m. at 305 East Sixth Avenue, where Harrington lived, Police Chief Marc Godwin said. The officers were not injured, he said.

"Mr. Harrington was loud causing a disturbance and drew a handgun and pointed it at the officers. The officers drew their weapons and fired," Godwin said in a statement.

The officers, whose names were not released, were wearing body cameras during the shooting, the police chief said. It would require a court order for the police department to release the video.

Harrington was pronounced dead at the scene, Godwin said.

Raeford, in Hoke County, is about 30 minutes west of Fayetteville.

Godwin said the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in a police shooting.
