BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library has offered critical resources to people throughout the pandemic.

What You Need To Know

  • Libraries across the state have helped people connect to the Internet and crucial resources

  • The state budget allocates $130 million to public libraries

  • Some of this funding goes to help the Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries maintain online databases

Director Mary Jean Jakubowski said her staff has walked people through things like applying for unemployment, contacting their local food bank, and most recently, applying for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment online.

"We know that there are many people in Western New York that do not have access to the Internet, or they’re not familiar with the computer, and so much of that is done through this virtual world," said Jakubowski.

With the most recent state budget, libraries are expected to receive $130 million for the maintenance, expansion, and renovation of existing libraries. Jakubowski said 9% of the system’s 37 public libraries’ budget relies on state funding and is used to maintain online databases and ensure people across the county have access to the same materials.

Those who cannot get to the library in person can sign up for “Library by Mail” to have books and other materials sent directly to them.

With the help of an anonymous donor, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system also offers "Library By Mail." This can be done over the phone at 716-858-7156 or online.
