AUSTIN, Texas – The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Texas on Monday, and on Tuesday morning staff with the University of Texas at Austin’s UT Health Austin and Dell Medical Staff, along with the University of Texas Austin School of Nursing, began distributing it to health care workers on the front lines.

“I did it because I want to help my community, and someone has to start,” said Stephanie Vasquez, a nurse with UT Health Austin who was among the first people in Austin to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The process of delivering and administering the vaccine began at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

“This is an exciting first, and we're honored and humbled to be able to deliver the vaccine to our hardworking health care professionals who have been keeping the community healthy for months,” Dell Medical School stated in a Facebook post.

The first doses are slated to go to about 300 clinicians with Dell Medical School and UT Health Austin.

In the coming weeks, those health care workers will receive the necessary second dose in order to strengthen immunity to the virus.

The school urged people who are waiting to be vaccinated to continue practicing social distancing and wear facial coverings.
