AUSTIN, Texas -- Vanilla Ice, whose hit “Ice Ice Baby” was a ‘90s staple, was set to perform a large Fourth of July weekend concert in Austin.

The rapper was slated to perform Friday at Emerald Point Bar & Grill, located on the Lake Travis shore. Following criticism that he was holding a concert during the worsening coronavirus pandemic, the rapper on Thursday postponed the show indefinitely.

Barrett Brannam, owner of Emerald Point Bar & Grill, told the Associated Press that Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, that he postponed the show due to health concerns. Brannam doesn't know when the show will take place.

“Hard to say. Could be later this summer or not until next summer. We don’t now how long this virus will be around,” he said.

With bars shut down, restaurant capacity reduced and limits on large gatherings in place, you might be wondering how this was even scheduled to take place.

The venue is technically a restaurant, which has allowed it to remain open. In addition, its large outdoor concert space allows concertgoers to skirt restrictions on large gatherings.

There were approximately 2,500 tickets being made available for the show, which is roughly half of the venue’s capacity.

The rapper earlier posted about the show on Instagram, writing, in part: “I can’t wait to get back to this. The 90s were the best. We didn’t have coronavirus, or cell phones, or computers.”

Texas on Wednesday reported 8,076 new cases of the novel coronavirus, a new record. In addition, 57 deaths were reported for the day and 6,904 people were hospitalized with the virus in the Lone Star State.
