According to the Austin Police Department, there was a domestic disturbance Sunday leading to a 74-year-old man barricading himself in a room of an apartment at the Salado at Walnut Creek Apartments on East Anderson Lane.

Nearby apartments were evacuated by while SWAT officers set a perimeter and attempted to resolve the situation.

Around 9 p. m., police say the man opened the front door of the apartment and shot at the SWAT team, hitting the SWAT team's tactical vehicle multiple times.

A 25-year veteran SWAT team member fatally shot the man.

Officers were wearing body cams, but since they were in a position of cover, Police Chief Brian Manley is unsure if footage from those cameras will be usable. However, the SWAT vehicle has a mounted camera that captured the incident.

"We understand there were many individuals present and some may have been running cell phones and videos. Reach out to APD and share that video with us so that that can be included in this investigation," said Manley.

The officer that fired the shots is on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
