AUSTIN, Texas -- Some of Travis County's best and finest continue to grapple over who will come out on top in the annual "Battle of the Badges" blood drive.
- Competition among first responders
- Blood donations most needed during summer
- Public donates, votes for first responder
It's more than just friendly competition between the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, Austin-Travis County EMS, and Travis County Sheriff's Office.
As the summer continues to heat up, so does the need for blood donations. In fact, first responders said is this is the time of year when they need donations the most.
Austin-Travis County EMS paramedics said their call volume increases in the summer because more people are traveling and there's increased outdoor activity. The increase in activity also means there is a greater likelihood of accidents.
Blood donor Anne Schaak recognizes that, so she has been donating to Battle of the Badges during the past five years. She said having the rare blood type, O-negative, inspired her to donate as much as she can.
"It's just my little part to be able to help out when needed. It's anonymous, it's great. I don't know who it goes to. It's very important to save lives in general,” said Schaak.
Schaak donated in favor of ATCEMS, who won last year's participation award. However, the Austin Police Department won overall for the most votes last year.
