SAN MARCOS, Texas — San Marcos police have arrested a man in connection to three sexual assaults.

  • SMPD arrested 20-year-old Tyshane Vris Thomas
  • Charged with 3 counts of aggravated sexual assault
  • Currently in Hays County Jail

Twenty-year-old Tyshane Vris Thomas was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of burglary.

According to SMPD, someone called police about a suspicious backpack in a stairwell at the Sanctuary Loft apartment complex. When officers searched the contents of the backpack, they found a black hooded sweatshirt, a black mask, a BB pistol made to look like a real handgun, and several items of women’s clothing. The backpack had the name Tyshane Thomas written on it in permanent marker.

Police found Thomas at the Sanctuary complex, where he lives with his girlfriend. He went to SMPD headquarters and was questioned for several hours. During the interview, Thomas, police said, confessed to committing one sexual assault in San Marcos on April 24, two on May 2, and one burglary committed on April 30.

Officers got a search warrant for the apartment where Thomas was staying. During the search they found other items believed to be tied to the prior assaults.

“This is a stellar example of the outstanding and tireless work done on a daily basis by members of this department,” SMPD Chief Chase Stapp said. “ It is also a great example of the effective relationships we have with our state and local partners. We are very thankful for the assistance we have received from the Texas Rangers and the FBI Central Texas Violent Crimes Task Force. We are also indebted to the observant citizen who decided to report something that was obviously suspicious and ultimately provided the break needed in this case.”

He is being held at the Hays County Jail. Bail has been set at $750,000. Thomas is a recent criminal justice student at Texas State University, last attending in the fall of 2018.
