NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- It's been a long time coming, with lots of planning from the bond advisory committee and New Braunfels City Council. Citizens will vote on a $120 million bond package to fund four different propositions.
- New Braunfels citizens to vote on $120 million bond package
- Would fund infrastructure improvements, library expansions, and more
- If rejected, another bond proposal won't be on table until at least 2025
"This council has hit the priorities. This is a no-frills package," New Braunfels Mayor Barron Casteel said.
The 2019 Bond is all-encompassing, tackling public safety, street improvements, parks and recreation, and city library expansions all without increasing the tax rate, Casteel said.
"It's based on conservative projections, it's based on existing value and what we believe will be the growth in the years ahead," Casteel said.
The bulk of the funding would improve public safety by replacing two fire stations, and creating a new police department headquarters. Another large chunk of money will improve several citywide streets, and reconstruct roads near Oak Creek and Klein Road elementary schools. There's also a library expansion, a cemetery wall stabilization, a new sports field complex, and the addition of all-abilities equipment at a city park.
"As the community grows, we need to continue to add those types of investments and add those types of investments that everyone in our city can use," Casteel said.
Unlike with previous bond packages, the city had preliminary engineering reports done with this bond to determine project costs and get a head start with the planning process.
"Immediately after the bond, May 4, our fiscal year starts in September, those projects will be kicked off. So there won't be that delay that there was in years past but that's because not only are we having more accurate numbers, but we're that much more further ahead on these priority needs."
If citizens reject the bond package, another bond will not be on the table until at least 2025.
