AUSTIN, Texas — Hundreds of people said their final goodbyes Saturday to Richard Overton.

  • Died at age 112
  • Buried at Texas State Cemetery
  • Full military honors at burial

Overton’s funeral took place at Shoreline Church in North Austin. The service honored the previously oldest living World War II veteran. He was a beloved member of the Austin community.

Gov. Greg Abbott and Austin Mayor Steve Adler both gave special remarks at the funeral service.

“What stood out was his genuine kindness and compassion,” said Abbott.

“The Austin area lost everyone’s great-great-great grandfather,” said Adler.

After a 16-mile procession down I-35, the Austin icon was buried at the Texas State Cemetery with full military honors. Overton’s burial plot is next to his cousin, Volma Overton Senior.

Overton died December 27 after battling pneumonia at age 112.
