The man accused of killing his girlfriend and her young son in Sodus has pleaded guilty to causing their deaths.

Alberto Reyes was charged in connection with the deaths of his then-girlfriend Selena Hidalgo-Calderon and her 14-month-old son Owen. He pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree manslaughter just days before his trial was slated to begin.

"I don't know how you bring closure or define justice when two young people are killed like this, suffering a loss," said Wayne County District Attorney Michael Calarco. "There is some solace, I think, that the family consented and was on board with this, sparing them from the turmoil of having to relive this again which is something that is always in our minds."

Hidalgo-Calderon's body was found on a Sodus farm in May 2018. Remains believed to be Owen's were eventually found about a half-mile from her body.

In admitting to the killings, Calarco said Reyes provided details as to how they were carried out, or why.

“The why is probably only going to be known to Mr. Reyes,” he said. “And he gave no indication as to the answer to that question."

“Reyes is going to do 20 years. When he gets out he will still have a life,” Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts said. “Those two people don't and the family has to continue to live with that."

Reyes was indicted on two counts of second-degree murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence last December.

According to police, Reyes previously admitted to moving Selena’s body, but did not admit to killing her. Until the indictment, he was not charged in connection with Owen’s death.
