There was a wave of blue in Rochester City Court as dozens of Rochester police officers showed up to support a colleague who was injured in the line of duty.

The man accused of attacking and stabbing Officer Brian Cala was in court for his arraignment Tuesday morning. Cala was seen leading the officers into court with a bandage on his face.

The suspect, Jamal Dima, 20, pleaded not guilty to felony attempted aggravated assault of a police officer and bail was set at $75,000.

Police say Cala and Officer Louis Mastrangelo were responding to reports of a man breaking out car windows and taillights on Glendale Park in Rochester on Sunday when the attack happened.

Police say when Cala knocked on the front door, Dima came out and went straight for Cala, stabbing him once in the face. Cala then fired five shots, hitting Dima once in the wrist.  Both men have since been released from the hospital.

"Officer Cala is doing great, all things considered. It was a vicious assault that took place on Sunday, but he's in great spirits, he has a lot of support from the men and women of the police department, as well as the outside agencies," said Rochester Police Department Captain Ray Dearcop.

Cala is a 22-year veteran of the police department, but won’t be back on the job anytime soon as he continues his recovery.

“He especially wanted me to thank the community as well for all the support and positive comments that he’s received,” Dearcop said.

Cala is described as a true hard-working street cop, someone who is known within the Lake Section, and who serves as a mentor to young officers.

Dima's father said his son has had mental health issues in the past and believes he may have been under the influence of drugs when the incident happened.

According to police, Dima could face additional charges pending a grand jury investigation.
