A Rochester police officer is recovering Sunday night after being stabbed while responding to a 911 call Sunday morning.
Police say the officer was stabbed in the face shortly after 11 a.m. on Glendale Park. He and another officer were originally called to the area after a call about a man breaking windows and possibly being on drugs.
Once they arrived, they were confronted by a 20-year-old man who police say attacked the officers with a knife without warning. During the encounter, one of the officers shot the suspect at least once in the upper body.
Police tell us the suspect was arrested after a brief foot chase and taken to Rochester General Hospital. The injured officer was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. Both are said to have minor injuries.
Police have spent hours investigating the incident and what the suspect was doing before the attack.
"Well we have to look at his history and see what maybe brought him to this point; whether or not there was substance abuse involved, any kind of drugs, alcohol, anything like that," said Deputy Chief Mark Mura, Rochester Police Department
Mayor Lovely Warren released a statement this evening that said in part, "While I am heartened to hear the injured officer will be released from the hospital and heading home soon, I ask all of our residents to pray for him and his family."
Police say the officer is a 20-year veteran of the department. None of the names of those involved have been released yet, but police say they will identify the suspect on Monday.
Spectrum News also spoke with someone who was on the scene during the incident.
One minute, Joseph Defazio was outside working on his car, the next he was taking cell phone video of what shows the officer on the porch of a home on Glendale Park.
"The two cops carrying off the other officer, bringing him to the vehicle," Defazio said.
Defazio and his brother, Antonio Rivera, describe what they witnessed.
"Like four gunshots ... and we just see the cop run out, like holding his face or something. It was [bloody]," Rivera said.
"Four kids [started] running off and I'm thinking, 'oh boy what's going on over here?' And shortly after that, I just hear sirens. [About] 15 cop cars [pulled] up," Defazio said.
Rivera and Defazio both watched as officers chased after the suspect.
Some folks who live in this neighborhood say they are used to seeing a police presence here, and crime, but not to this extent.
"It's crazy. Like, something has happened before, but I've never actually seen it before. It's the first time I've actually seen it happen," Rivera said.
The two witnesses are among those hoping for the best for the wounded police officer and who are still trying to wrap their heads around seeing and hearing it all unfold.
