Rochester Police released new information about the stabbing of a police officer, which occurred Sunday morning in Glendale Park.
Police say officers Brian Cala and Louis Mastrangelo responded to 108 Glendale Park for a report of a male breaking out windows and taillights of a vehicle.
When officer Cala knocked on the door, police say Jamal Dima attacked him, stabbing him in the face.
Officer Cala then discharged his service weapon and fired five shots. Dima was injured in the wrist and ran away.
Police say he was arrested on Dewey Avenue without further incident.
Rochester police Chief La'ron Singletary says the whole incident happened in a matter of two to three seconds. He says his officers followed protocol.
"Anytime a police officer is injured in the line of duty, it's a serious incident. Brian Cala did exactly, and Louis Mastrangelo did exactly the way they were trained,” Singletary said. “They performed exactly the way we train them. And that's the frustrating part as a chief.”
Mike Mazzeo, president of the Locust Club, the police union representing Rochester officers, was also saddened to hear another officer was stabbed.
"We're seeing more unprovoked attacks…violent responses to police officers responding to calls for service. We're seeing more and more encounters of physical encounters in situations that we probably didn't see in the past," said Mazzeo.
Dima is charged with attempted aggravated assault of a police officer, which is a class C- Felony.
Officer Cala has been released from the hospital and is being monitored by medical professionals.
