New details are emerging about the suspect accused of stabbing a Rochester police officer on Sunday.
Spectrum News visited the home where the incident happened and spoke with the suspect’s father. He did not want to appear on camera but he identified his son as Jamal Dima, 20. He says Jamal has been dealing with mental health issues for some time and that there has been at least one call to police before at the home due to his son’s behavior.
However, on Sunday, shortly after 11 a.m., Jamal’s father says his son appeared to be under the influence of a drug called K2. When Jamal returned home, he allegedly caused a disturbance and the father called 911. When officers arrived, that’s when police say the suspect came at them with a knife.
Jamal was shot by police before being taken into custody. He’s being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Rochester General Hospital. His father says he pleaded with officers not kill his son and he feels bad for the injured officer. He is also offering his apologies to that officer’s family.
Jamal’s father says he has tried to get help for his son several times, but because his son is an adult over the age of 18, he must seek help himself. Something his father says they have not had success with. He also says Jamal's mother is with him at the hospital.
The officer who was stabbed has been treated at Strong Memorial Hospital and released. The Rochester Police Department is expected to provide an update on Monday.
