FAIRPORT, N.Y. — A major facelift is starting on a section of sidewalks along North Main Street through the village of Fairport the next several months.

The walkable village of Fairport is starting another round of improvements, this time focused on pedestrian safety and accessibility. Aging, uneven sidewalks will be replaced and new benches are going in, along with updated light posts, plantar boxes and treesand crosswalks. Most of the work is happening between the curb and building facades.

What You Need To Know

  • Project work includes trees, sidewalks, utilities, streetlights, curbs, plantings and crosswalks and more

  • The Street Scape is funded by a $4 million federal grant and $1 millon investment from the village

  • Businesses will be open and community events will go on as planned

"We have tourists that come for a variety of reasons; maybe it's our music festivals, maybe it's the train viewing platform, or maybe it's coming in by boat on the canal. When they get here they want to walk around and see what's here. So, having these upgrades and improved sidewalks is going to really improve the experience of everybody who lives here or who comes and visits," said Nancy Ragus, executive director of Fairport Perinton Partnership.

The project runs from Deland Park A to just south of Church Street. All businesses are open and all upcoming events will go on as scheduled including the Memorial Day Parade and Canal Days.

While the sidewalk improvement project is taking place, the NYSDOT will be working on the culvert over Thomas Creek that runs through the village. A portion of N. Main Street will be closed to vehicles for about four months, but pedestrians will still be able to get through.
