More than half of Monroe County's legislators are calling for local leaders to reaffirm and uphold constitutional rights in the community.
The county legislature's Democratic Majority Caucus introduced a memorializing resolution on Tuesday.
It's meant to reaffirm the rights to free speech, equal protection under the law and due process, regardless of a person's political views or immigration status.
“This resolution is a reflection of shared commitment to democracy, dignity, and the rule of law,” Legislature President Yversha Román said in a statement. “It is a statement that Monroe County stands for fairness, freedom, and human dignity. A reminder that we took an oath to serve our community and uphold our Constitution, and with this statement we affirm that oath.”
The Democratic Majority Caucus says it is encouraging members of the Republican Caucus to add their names to the resolution.
“This is a moment for us to come together around the values we all swore an oath to uphold," Majority Leader Michael Yudelson said in a statement. "I encourage all of my colleagues to join us in affirming the Constitution and the rights it guarantees.”
This comes after a controversial traffic stop involving members of U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and the Rochester Police Department late last month.
That incident led to three people being detained by federal agents, one of whom is now charged with illegal reentry.
Some city leaders say the officers involved violated Rochester's sanctuary city policy by helping detain those individuals.
An RPD internal investigation is currently underway.
