It's the first full week of National Guard presence in Rochester to help manage the ongoing asylum seeker situation.
Members of the National Guard arrived at the downtown Holiday Inn Friday at the request of Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. He says the Guard members will be used to coordinate resources for the asylum seekers, including food, water and health needs. Bello says the members of the National Guard are not there as a police force.
In addition to providing help to migrants, Guard troops will be overseeing contracts to ensure New York City is footing the bill and not Monroe County taxpayers.
New York City officials are dealing with tens of thousands of asylum seekers. There is a new proposal that would house migrants in previously shuttered jails, including the Metropolitan Correctional Center, which was closed after years of poor conditions and security lapses. Some have been critical of the plan, saying migrants should not be put into poor conditions.
