OVID, N.Y. — One week ago, a massive fire destroyed much of Main Street in the village of Ovid.
After the loss of its only grocery store, the community is keeping each other fed.
Like most in the village of Ovid, Selena and Scott Krone did all their shopping at the Big M supermarket.
“It always felt like home there," Selena said. "Everybody knew us and said hi."
Now this is their grocery store, a small room in the back of the Ovid Fire Department.
“This is five or six day’s worth, but we’ll have to stretch them out," said Scott while loading their bags with what food they’ll need for the week.
After a fire destroyed Ovid’s only grocery store, Traci Rappleye jumped in to help.
“For about 20 miles we have nothing," said Rappleye. "For now, this is all we have."
She's been organizing donations from the community into a pop-up grocery store inside the fire department.
“It’s very heartbreaking to have the feeling that we need to have this," said Rappleye. "But at the same time I’ve had joy to be able to help them."
Food is coming in not only from those in Ovid but from neighboring towns. Food pantries in Geneva and Canandaigua have donated much-needed fresh fruits and veggies.
“A lot of those townships stepped up because their fire departments were here with us that night," said Rappleye. "They saw it firsthand."
The Krones don’t know what their next grocery run looks like but they do know they’re not in this alone.
“People in Ovid are like a big family; we take care of each other," Selena said.
The pop-up pantry at the Ovid Fire Department runs until 7 p.m. Tuesday. A full list of resources in Seneca County can be found here.
