Rochester City Councilmember Mary Lupien is running for mayor.

The East District representative confirms to Spectrum News 1 that she is seeking the Democratic designation and is challenging fellow party member and incumbent Malik Evans in a June primary.

Evans announced his reelection bid last Friday.

Political newcomer and business executive Shashi Sinha also announced a run last week as a Democrat.

Lupien says she's running because she believes the city is in crisis and needs change. She says she wants to have a dialogue with residents about finding solutions.

Lupien was first elected to city council in 2020.

Lupien will formally announce her run later this month.
