ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It’s a routine Johan Spijker has done once a week for 15 years: delivering food around Rochester with Meals on Wheels.
“It was a good fit right away," said Spijker.
The routes have changed over the years, but the feeling it brings him is the same.
“The people make you feel great. When you do something for them and every person says thank you," said Spijker.
The people receiving the food are often homebound making socialization difficult. It's something Spijker keeps in mind making his stops.
“I do make a little small talk with them," said Spijker. "Sometimes it's the only human contact they get all day."
There are 800 people enrolled in meals on wheels throughout the Greater Rochester area. More than 200,000 meals get served each year.
It’s a need Spijker has seen change over the years.
“I see more of it, but I’ve also had routes with 12 people and then it goes down to six," said Spijker.
No matter how many people he serves, Spijker says he’ll be at their door as long as he can.
“I get a lot out of it," said Spijker. “I think I get more out of it than the people I deliver the meals to."
