It’s been 16 years since a United States men’s gymnastics team won a medal during the Olympics, a moment coach Kenny Byrd doesn't take lightly.

"It brought me to tears. I kid you not," said Byrd.

Byrd’s been involved in the sport for 30 years, doing everything from competing to now coaching the next generation of gymnasts.

"One of our big models here at Victors is a successful life and lifting kids up to excellence," said Byrd.

Byrd says there’s limited options for men in the sport – there are only 15 colligate gymnastics programs for men in the country, compared to around 80 programs for women.

Byrd hopes that this historic Olympic win inspires other young men to get on the mat.

"Seeing it grow and having opportunities like the Olympics to really shed light on the strength and ability of what it takes to be a gymnast," said Byrd. "It’s definitely turning some heads."
