Le Roy, N.Y. — Prom season is here, and the cost of a gown, tuxedo, shoes and accessories sure can add up. That's why a high school in Genesee County has created a student clothing closet to help.

What You Need To Know

  • The Knights' Closet has free clothing, school supplies and hygiene products for students

  • It's located inside Le Roy High School and open during school

  • Staff, teachers and Le Roy residents donate the items

Le Roy High School has a Knights' Closet located right inside the school where students are welcome to anything in it, free of charge. This resource room is full of jeans, shirts, athletic gear, hygiene products and even formal wear. Teachers, staff and families donated the items for any student in need.

Le Roy teacher Jen Bertrand leads the way when it comes to organizing it all and setting it up like a store. Bertrand wants students to feel comfortable. Students like sophomore Wynter Barnum help sort and display donations.

"People come in and grab whatever they need. If they don't have a prom dress, they can get one here," said Barnum.

Sophomore Kaylin Stanley donated a floor-length sequin and chiffon dress. She said she was happy to see it put to use. There's even dress shoes for girls and guys, suits, dress shirts in various colors and sizes and even jewelry available at the Knights' Closet.

Prom can be financially stressful for some families. Spectrum News 1 checked in with some retail shops to find that the average cost of just a prom dress is around $300. A tux rental can start around $100.

"...It's nice to have all the stuff to be able to grab for free. It doesn't cost anything. We just put it up and anyone can use it. Most schools don't have this. It's a great thing. People might not have access. This is great to give that to them," said junior Andrew Greene.

The Knights Closet is open every day during school. Le Roy CSD hopes to inspire other high schools to open a clothing closet.
