The best women bowlers from around the world are competing in Rochester. ABC Gates Bowl is hosting the U.S. Women’s Open up until June 20.

ABC Gates Bowl and its 48 lanes of play is packed with some major talent. The 108-player field includes pro bowlers from around the world.

What You Need To Know

  • The U.S. Women's Open is the second major championship on the 2023 PWBA Tour schedule

  • It's happening at the ABC Gates Bowl June 13-20

  • Participants in the 108-player field earn their spots primarily through invitations based on their on-lane performances during the previous year

  • Players also can earn their spot through a pre-tournament qualifier before the start of the tournament

Spencerport’s Kara Mangiola is competing. She threw a perfect game as an amateur. She turned pro three years ago. The PWBA tour was just in Las Vegas, but for Mangiola, there’s no place like home. She works at Gates Bowl in the off-season.

“They tried to limit me as to the number of people I could bring. I have a lot of cousins and my mom and my dad and grandparents are coming and a lot of my friends. They even made little bobbleheads,” laughed Mangiola. "I get to have all my family here to watch, so it's exciting."

She’s got some tough competition. Lindsay Boomershine won the first major of the 2023 tour. She lives in Utah now, but is originally from Amherst.

“Bowling is such an interesting and unique sport, and I think more people need to really dive into it,” Boomershine said. “I fell in love with it when I was five years old and I think it’s a great sport to be a part of. It is awesome to do this with friends and family by your side. The opportunity that the PWBA and USBC gave us to come out here and bowl in the most prestigious event is absolutely amazing.”

You won't find bigger bowling fans than Russ Vallone and Kelvin Parker. They bought ABC Gates Bowl three years ago. They want Rochester to be the mecca of pro bowling it once was decades ago.

“We both grew up at Olympic Bowl back in the golden years of bowling,” Vallone said. “Our goal is to bring that back and build it back up to what it once was. We may not get there, but we’re going to try real hard to it.”

The total prize money for the U.S. Women's Open is $281,250. The winner will take home $60,000. If you'd like to go, you can catch all the action today through Tuesday at ABC Gates Bowl, 645 Spencerport Road in Gates. Ticket prices start at $20 and on up to $50 for preferred seating.
