In honor of the Worldwide Day of Play, museums across the nation will open their doors for special activities. Among them is The Strong National Museum of Play. Known as one of the largest history museums in the United States, The Strong is best recognized for its National Toy Hall of Fame. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of historical materials related to play, attracting visitors of all ages. And while it’s a haven for children, it’s a place where adults can also come to rediscover the joy of play.

"In celebration of the Worldwide Day of Play, certainly the entire museum is available and open to play. But what we're really promoting on that day is active play. So in our big atrium area, we're going to be bringing out hopscotch and hula hoops, and we're inviting people to play fun children's games like 'Duck, Duck, Goose.' It's really about getting kids moving with their families," said Shane Rhinewald, director of communications at The Strong.

Playtime offers more than just physical benefits.

"It helps them to communicate, express their feelings, modify behavior, problem-solve and relate to others. Play can also help children better understand trauma they've experienced or express their needs, which can give them a sense of control in their lives," said Anna Ladella, a primary therapist at the Home-Based Crisis Center at Rochester General Health.

The Strong National Museum of Play will host activities for the Worldwide Day of Play from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday. Families are invited to take part in a variety of games and activities.
