ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department has released the name of a woman who they say was murdered in front of her two young children on Garden Street.
Police say Genuine Ridgeway, 31, was shot inside her car while her 3- and 8-year-old children were in the backseats. The children were not hurt and were taken away from the scene by crisis counselors.
”At 3, you should be worrying about where your teddy bear is or what your snacks are going to be,” RPD Interim Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan said. “Not worrying about dodging bullets and watching your mom die right in front of you.”
No arrests have been made.
Spectrum News 1 spoke with one witness who says the victim’s daughter came up to his door saying her mom had been shot. He helped her and then went outside to check on her mother and brother who were still in the car.
“She said, ‘my mom just got shot, I don’t know if she’s breathing,’ and I went outside and I saw her last cough and I heard it, and her head went to the side and the lady was like, 'wake up, wake up,'” Tray, of Rochester, said.
Herriott-Sullivan says the recent increase in violence has been a trend across the country, not just in Rochester.
The department says its tactical unit will be pursuing leads to make arrests following the most recent homicide, as well as the one on Genesee Street Wednesday night and the one on Bartlett Street.
An investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to please call 911.
