Less than two years after being convicted of tampering with evidence in connection with the death of his father, a now 22-year-old Alex Rideout has an opportunity to be set free.

Craig Rideout's battered body was discovered in Yates County. Authorities say he'd been killed in the basement of his Penfield home.

"Obviously, this event is something that's never going to go away and obviously we're going to live with it for the rest of our lives and without him for the rest of our lives," said Robbyn Drew, Craig'ssister.

Drew wrote a letter to parole decision makers asking that Alex to remain in prison for the length of his sentence.

In 2017, a jury convicted his brother Colin Rideout and their mother, Laura Rideout of murder. Both are currently serving life sentences.

Alex, who was acquitted of murder, was sentenced to 2 and 2/3-8 years for evidence tampering. He's eligible for parole in March of 2020, but will have a merit time release hearing next week. It allows early release for offenders who took part in work or treatment programs.

"Once he's done the time that he has been given by the court then by all means it would be his time to come out," Drew said. "He's served his sentence, he's served his time, but I would hope that they wouldn't allow him out any sooner."

Drew says events like the upcoming hearing force the family to relive their nightmare.

"It's hard, it's hard to relive it and it brings back the anger and the disbelief of this even happening," she said.

Drew says her mother, children, friends of Craig and co-workers all wrote letters.

A decision is expected within the two weeks following the June 10 hearing.
