When the Sheehan family started looking for a new home, they knew it needed more space for their two young boys.

Allie and Matt Sheehan decided to move from New York City to the Rochester area to be closer to family. They liked the idea of being in an area within walking distance of restaurants and shops.

"We visited a year ago, drove around the east side and the village of Pittsford. We loved it," said Allie Sheehan.

The Sheehans worked with a real estate agent for a year looking at listings. It wasn’t easy finding a home that fit their needs.

"It felt like I was competing, there was so much adrenaline,” said Allie. “There were a lot of offers on this house.”

According to realtor.com, Pittsford’s 14534 zip code is one of the hottest in the country for homebuyers. It’s something real estate agents like Derek Heerkens are noticing too.

“What we’re seeing now is average home prices in Pittsford are $450,000 compared to in the 300s four or five years ago," said Heerkens.

Heerkens says the housing market around Rochester is one of the most competitive in the country. And until it becomes more balanced with inventory, buyers can expect to pay more.

"We are an anomaly. We’re a market that hasn’t hit those valleys yet," said Heerkens.

Other popular zip codes on the list include Binghamton at number 28 and Ithaca at number 36.

According to the list, more people are looking to move out of New York City and into those zip codes.
