Henrietta town officials are responding to complaints about an increase in many property assessments.
They say over the last two years, median home sale prices in the area have risen by nearly 40%. Smaller, entry-level homes are in higher demand, meaning owners who once paid less are seeing increased prices and a larger share of the tax levy.
"We don't get one penny more by raising assessments," said Henrietta Town Supervisor Steve Schultz. "We don't get one penny less by lowering it. Assessments don't determine how much we collect, they determine how the tax levy is split among the 14,000-plus parcels in Henrietta."
Town officials say it is legally barred from suspending those assessments, however, you can request a formal review by heading to the town or state tax department website.
