The YMCA of Greater Rochester has announced the construction of a new child care center.
The new facility is being built at the Eastside Family YMCA in Penfield. Officials say it will serve 120 children, expanding the current capacity by 44.
"We get an opportunity to serve more kids in the child care desert area — that means a lot. That really means families can find, not only affordable child care, but being in a great space dedicated to youth development. Allowing families, also, to come together in this space means a lot," said Ernie Lamour, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
The new child care center will feature two playgrounds, four infant rooms and three preschool and toddler rooms. It's located directly in a child care desert where data shows there is just one available child care slot per 12 children under the age of 5.
The YMCA says that during construction, there will be no disruption to child care at the current location at Fairport Baptist Homes.
The center is being built with the help of state funding, an Empire State Development grant and support from the Joseph & Irene Skalny Charitable Trust.
It's expected to open next winter.
