Port Jervis police are investigating the death of a 32-year-old woman.
Officers responded to an apartment building at 25 East Main Street Monday night for a 911 call. Heather Aleman, a mother of three young boys, was found dead inside the apartment.
Officers sealed off the apartment building as a potential crime scene, initially investigating Aleman's death as a possible homicide. Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden told Spectrum News this does not appear to be a suspicious death.
"I can assure you there's no threat to public safety at this time; the autopsy is indicating that there are no signs of foul play," Worden said.
Police are awaiting the results of that autopsy and lab testing to make a final determination.
"I really couldn’t believe it just for the simple fact that I had saw her the night before," said Kevin Auguste, Aleman's neighbor.
Police have cleared the scene and allowed residents to return to their apartments inside. Police are continuing the investigation as they wait for those autopsy and test results, which could take several weeks.
A GofundMe page has been set up to raise money for Aleman's three children.
