Many people are struggling financially because of the pandemic.

For people who may be sacrificing heat to save on their energy bill, HEAP funding is available through your county’s department of social services.

NYSEG also has an internal program called Project Share.

What You Need To Know

  • HEAP funding is available through your county’s department of social services

  • NYSEG also has an internal bill assistance program called Project Share

  • NYSEG will also set up payment plans as a long-term solution

“We actually just renewed our commitment to Project Share with a $400,000 donation. It’s meant to help customers who have no other assistance programs available to them. They can apply to this program, and it’s meant to be that safety net,” says Ridge Harris, a NYSEG corporate communications manager.

Harris says if you’re having trouble paying your bill, don’t hesitate to reach out.

“We’ll work with everyone on a case-by-case basis so that we’re working with each customer, so they’re able to manage their energy bills,” Harris said.

Harris also has some tips to help you stay safe while heating your home.

“They should always be sure their vents are clear of ice and snow, and you know that’s to reduce impacts of ventilation being built up inside your home. You want to make sure you have proper ventilation of natural gas exhaust,” Harris said.

He says if you suspect a gas leak - it will smell like rotting eggs - call 911 immediately.
