Like a NASCAR pit crew, organizers and volunteers swarmed each car that came through the line at the Saugerties Senior Center on Friday.

Ulster County Community Action Outreach Program Director Suzy Hinchey organized Friday morning’s free farm stand in Saugerties. She is planning to hold similar events here on the fourth Friday of each month through the summer with help from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

“We try to target disabled and seniors, and the single parent families...and anyone who needs food,” Hinchey said. “We don’t have strict requirements.”

Many who came through the line were local senior citizens on food runs for other people in their neighborhoods.

Ruth Walsh was bringing a giant grocery load back to her senior living community.

“Several of my neighbors don’t have cars, so they let me pick up for them, too,” Walsh said. “Right now, everything is so tight. Being able to get fresh food in the house is awesome.”

Hinchey also made sure every car received information about Ulster County Community Action’s other services.

The nonprofit recently received $650,000 through the federal CARES Act to help pay bills that some people might have fallen behind on during the pandemic. Those include back rent payments, utility bills and prescriptions.

While she had successfully run similar giveaways in other communities, this was Hinchey’s first time organizing one in Saugerties.

Hinchey said her team helped about 120 families and distributed around 8,000 pounds of food in just over an hour.

“We’re hoping next month, we do more families with more food,” she said.
