The Baldwinsville Central School District Board of Education on Wednesday approved Dr. Joseph DeBarbieri to serve as the next superintendent of schools.

DeBarbieri will replace Jason Thomson, who resigned after he was pulled over for drunk driving following a Baldwinsville High School football game back in October. After originally pleading not guilty to a DWI charge in court, Thomson pleaded guilty to a lesser DWAI charge in December, which resulted in a $500 fine and 90-day license suspension.

Thomson will remain on paid administrative leave until his resignation becomes effective on June 30.

Dr. DeBarbieri has been deputy superintendent since 2016 and has also served as acting superintendent of schools. He started in the district as a math teacher at Charles W. Baker High School in 2002. He will take on the role of permanent superintendent effective July 1.

“The board and I have had many long nights and careful discussions, and we believe that Dr. DeBarbieri will provide the consistency and stability the district needs,” said Acting Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Davis.

Davis will continue serving as acting superintendent until the end of the school year to assist with the transition.

School officials said the board made its decision based on community feedback in writing and at public board meetings, as well as a recent staff ThoughtExchange.

"The board is committed to working as a team with Dr. DeBarbieri to move the district forward for the students," said Board President Jennifer Patruno.
