An Albany police officer has been suspended without pay after being caught on video making racially charged statements.

The footage was captured on video during an on-duty conversation between the officer and an Albany County sheriff's deputy.

The Albany County District Attorney's office says the remarks fall under Brady disclosure rules, which means the video can be used as evidence that the officer has racist tendencies, in cases where he appeared as a witness in the prosecution of a black defendant. The district attorney’s office says cases like that involving the officer will be under review.

Police Chief Eric Hawkins called the comments appalling, but said they “in no way reflect those of the overwhelming majority of police officers at the Albany Police Department." He added that the department is "committed to working together with our community to build relationships, improve quality of life and enhance public safety.”

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the incident undermines the work of the Albany Policing Reform Collaborative, and that "policing works when officers and the public trust and respect one another."
