RALEIGH, N.C. — There was a full weekend of festivities planned to celebrate the inauguration of North Carolina's new governor, Josh Stein. But with snow and ice in the forecast for the entire state Friday and Saturday, the governor's office canceled the ceremony and other events.
Stein will instead give his inaugural address at 11 a.m. Saturday on PBS North Carolina.
"Due to approaching winter weather across North Carolina, the inaugural ceremony, block party, and open house this weekend have been canceled," Stein said on social media Wednesday evening.
"I am really disappointed for all of the NC musicians, dancers, and food trucks that were eager to share their talents with the state, and I was looking forward to celebrating with so many of you. But everyone's safety is always my top priority," the governor said.
North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby swore in the new governor on Jan. 1.
