UAlbany men's basketball coach Dwayne Killings was arraigned in Kentucky on Monday on an assault charge.

Madison County District Court records show that Killings is facing a fourth-degree assault no visible injury charge, which stems from a 2021 incident involving a student athlete.

The Madison County court clerk said Killings pleaded not guilty on Monday morning and is due back in court March 20.

An investigation by the university found there was inappropriate contact between Killings and Luke Fizulich — a sophomore at the time — in November 2021.

A lawsuit filed by Fizulich accuses Killings of violently assaulting him in a locker room while the team was playing on the road in Kentucky. The lawsuit said the coach grabbed Fizulich and threw him against a locker, drawing blood.

Killings was fined $25,000 by the school and suspended for five games this season.

Fizulich filed a lawsuit seeking damages against Killings, Athletic Director Mark Benson and UAlbany in November.

UAlbany released a statement to Spectrum News 1, which reads:

"The University is aware of the complaint recently filed in Kentucky. The university’s understanding is that the underlying allegation is substantively the same information reported to the university in February 2022, which triggered UAlbany’s personnel investigation and resulted in Coach Killings serving a five-game suspension and paying a $25,000 fine last year. At this time, the university is not aware of any additional information that would result in a change in Coach Killings’ status. Should additional information become available, the University will respond appropriately."

UAlbany will next face the New Hampshire Wildcats on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 p.m.
