It’s been 20 years since NCAA’s March Madness set up shop in the Capital Region, and this weekend’s slate of games is sure to attract thousands of people from across the country looking to be a part of the big dance.

Fans flocked into MVP Arena Friday to cheer on their favorite team in the flesh.

“The VCU Rams," said Ann Berkmann from Albany. “Whoo Hoo!”

“I do have a future on UConn, so I hope they do well today,” said John Murray from East Greenbush. “Iona is a tough matchup. They play Siena twice here every year.”

The annual college hoops tournament was slated to march into Albany in 2020, but was canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic. Fans say it’s been worth the wait.

“I think it’s incredible, but tickets were impossible to find,” Berkmann said. “I’m so happy they’re here.”

The crowds are sure to bring in a lot of business to the downtown area.

“We’re tabulating a very conservative number of about $3.5 million of event impact for just the three days the event is here,” said Discover Albany Sports Commissioner Jay Cloutier.

And while the Capital City has rolled out the welcome mat, all eyes will be on the court.

“I’m just looking forward to some good game,” said Murray. “Hopefully, a buzzer beater would be nice, and let’s get the madness going.”

The action does not conclude Friday. After an off day tomorrow, action returns to the court Sunday.
