Recent shootings that took the lives of several residents in the city of Albany have left many community members trying to cope, including youth.
Those young adults and teens got a chance to express that grief at a ‘Speak Out’ event held during the South End Night Market Thursday evening. The event was hosted by various community organizations like Youth FX, YPA, and Elevate 518.
People who spoke out say the fatal shootings that occurred over the last month, especially that of Destiny Greene, who was just 15 years old when her life was taken.
“I recognize she won’t even get the chance to worry about what, when do I graduate, what dress is she going to wear for prom,” said resident Xji’anne Hudson.
“Whether it's gun violence or violence that happens among young people because of the lack of resources for us and the neglect that happens systemically, you just kind of become numb," said Jahaira Roldan, from Project Try.
The community says it will continue to combat violence by holding safe spaces for young people to enjoy during the summer.
