A staggering budget shortfall has forced the Schenectady City School District to make a second round of layoffs to teaching and other positions.

After the school board vote Friday night, the district has eliminated 107 teachers, social workers and counselor positions, as well as 231 support staff positions.

That special meeting came after the acting superintendent laid out the impact of a $30 million shortfall, with a 20 percent reduction in state and federal funding; much of that from Foundation Aid.

The board has said Schenectady schools and other lower-income districts are bearing the brunt of these cuts.

The distrcit says the cuts equate to a $2,100 loss per student, compared to a $600 loss in a similarly sized district that doesn't rely as heavily on state aid.

Another round of layoffs is slated to be voted on September 16.
