Today is looking a lot like the 1950s at Jericho Drive-In in Glenmont.

Kids peeked out the car window, couples snuggled in their cars together, and friends gathered in the back seats as it was movie night at Jericho.

“We just like the idea to come to the drive-in, since none of us have been before,” said one moviegoer.

With the pandemic crippling so many businesses this year, owners Mike and Lisa Chenette breathed a sigh of relief to see the community rolling in to support a retro pastime.

“We’re very excited,” said Lisa.

“We’ve been here 62 years,” Mike added.

The theater was one of the first entertainment venues approved for re-opening in upstate New York, so Lisa and Mike got to work getting making it a fun and safe gathering spot.

“We were able to very quickly create an online ordering system,” said Lisa.

They made snacks, tickets, and ice cream transactions all contactless.

While observing social distancing guidelines, they’re also operating at a 50% capacity, too, which gives more peace of mind for moviegoers who just want to have a good time.

“We were running out of things to do with this whole pandemic, and this just seemed like something fun to do,” said one of a group of friends who came to the drive-in.

The Chenettes are hoping to utilize the silver screens for more than just movies. They’re looking to add virtual graduation ceremonies too.

“We have a number of people here that are scheduling their graduations,” said Lisa.

For now, it’s a place to remember what social outings felt like before the pandemic.
