The Cohoes Community Center has a new owner.

The community center's board president David Mitola says it's been sold for $460,000 to Craig Roopchand. The sale was finalized last week. He says the plan is to turn the facility into an aquatics center and continue operating as a non-profit.

According to its website, the center will now be called Gateway Sports Complex and it's expected to open this spring.

Mayor Bill Keeler says he has talked to the new owner at great lengths about its future.

"His vision is to restore the physical plant of the building, to bring in all new equipment, and he wants to market it so he has 500, 1000 members," Keeler said. "That sounds great. I certainly wish him luck and we'll collaborate with him when we can."

The community center closed in October 2018 due to a massive debt. Mitola says the final audit is underway to determine the exact amount owed.
