The fight for former St. Clare's workers continues with the Schenectady County Legislature affirming its support for retirees.

The decision Tuesday to back the workers comes after many who worked at the now-shuttered hospital saw their pensions shrink and even disappear just a year ago.

Since then, there's been a big push to see the more than 1,100 employees recover pension funds worth millions.

The New York State Attorney General's office said the corporation's trustees never purchased insurance for the pension fund before it collapsed.

St. Clare's was taken over by Ellis Hospital in 2008 and many vested in the pension plan hadn't even retired.

Ernie Daviero, who lost his wife, a former St. Clare's employee, four months ago talks about the strain this is putting on family finances.

"This has to go for the city of Schenectady and all the employees who worked there, they have to have to have their pension. It's terrible to see people not get their pension," Daviero said.

Mary Hartshoren, who has helped organize the push to recover pensions, said, "we worked hard and took care of people in Schenectady County and we continue to do that. We don't deserve to lose our pension."

Among the city legislature support, workers continue to receive legal counsel from members of Albany Law School in an effort to recover their pensions.
